Lévy, Tony - Burnett, Charles, "Sefer ha-Middot: A Mid-Twelfth-Century Text on Arithmetic and Geometry Attributed to Abraham Ibn Ezra", Aleph: Historical Studies in Science and Judaism, 6 (2006), 57-238.
- Resum
- Two versions (Hebrew and Latin) of a hitherto unknown text on arithmetic and geometry, attributed in the Hebrew manuscript to the Jewish polymath, Abraham Ibn Ezra, are presented, along with an English translation. This substantial text, which may be referred to as Sefer ha-Middot ("Book of Measurements"), consists of notes on arithmetic and a systematic treatise on geometry. The Latin version, which is a translation of the Hebrew, is extant in a manuscript apparently copied in the mid-twelfth century. It provides the opening paragraphs which are missing in the Hebrew, while the Hebrew continues after the Latin breaks off. A commentary explains the mathematical procedures in modern notation and also points out the parallels, in doctrine and terminology, with other works by Ibn Ezra and the differences between the Hebrew and Latin versions. A glossary of technical terms in both languages, with the English equivalents, is appended.
