- Resum
- The main intention of Copernicus's planetary models was to avoid the use of the equant point. According to Copernicus, the equant requires “that the planet never moves with uniform velocity either in its deferent sphere or with respect to its proper center”. Consequently, a model with equants seems “neither perfect enough nor sufficiently in accordance with reason”. This was exactly the same reason that led Islamic astronomers to propose, within a Geocentric framework, very similar models centuries before. In the Copernican and Islamic models, the effect of the equant point is successfully replaced by a combination of two circular and uniform motions, sometimes represented by eccentrics, sometimes by epicycles or by a combination of both. It is easy to show the geometrical relationship between these equant-less models and the Ptolemaic model. A rather different issue, however, is to produce these models departing from the Ptolemaic one. There is no record of how either the Islamic astronomers or Copernicus arrived at this model. In this paper, thus, I propose a possible path that they could have followed.
