- Resum
- The Mainauer Naturlehre is passed down in a single manuscript dating from about 1300 written by an anonymous German author. The text consists of a first astronomical and a second computational section of which the latter includes a longer dietetical part. The aim of the first chapter of the present article is to give proof of the fact that the computational parts of the Mainauer Naturlehre, which make up about 75% of the whole text, are based on the Computus ecclesiasticus of Johannes de Sacrobosco whose teaching books were standard textbooks used in the medieval university curriculum. The second chapter of the article deals with questions concentrated on the sociological classification of the text: It is to expect that the author of the Mainauer Naturlehre has gone through university studies, possibly he was a theologian. The further investigation shows that the Mainauer Naturlehre most probably has to be seen as a teaching book destined for quadrivial instruction suitable for a heterogeneous circle of illitterate pupils because the text does not presuppose any kind of knowledge but itself gives all details necessary for an understanding of the subjects treated.
