- Resum
- There are relevant examples of medical texts on Pediatrics since 15th century. Sometimes, these are mere repetitions or versions of Greco-Roman works (Hippocrates, Galen, Soranus and Muscio) as well as Arabic ones (Rhazes). However, this discipline, as a medical area of study, blossomed in the following century. It is then when new treatises about child illnesses were born, but were considered independently from gynaecological and obstetrical texts. In these handbooks, experience is combined with a new critical outlook at resources and a special attention paid to language. They also present a wider scope than the Pediatric chapters of the medical treatises written during the Renaissance humanist medicine. The aim of this paper is to study one of these treatises on child illnesses, De morbis puerorum, written by Girolamo Mercuriale. He was an editor and translator of Hippocrates, a famous collector of antique texts, a physician and an Italian humanist. He was also a pioneer in the genre together with the Spanish physician Luis Mercado.
