- Resum
- The article summarizes the ideas of some authors, who have tried to translate the complex symbolic material present in ancient alchemical texts into the experience of modern people. The importance of alchemy for the history of chemistry is established; on the other hand, its importance for the human psychology is still partially unknown. Historians of alchemy, for the most part, still reject some different interpretations, considering them to be simplistic and irrational. Yet, a knowledge such as that contained in ancient alchemical texts seems to open a hermeneutic discourse, where the different symbolic meanings can emerge in a new and timeless interpretative space, made up of the relationship between us, the contemporaries, and the ancient texts. It is thanks to the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung, one of the most charismatic figures of twentieth century thought, for having offered us an interpretative key for a series of texts which, if read literally, can be difficult to understand: his studies present the discipline as a kind of ancient soul development process. Alchemical symbolism in fact have significant similarities with the symbolism of dreams and archetypes, on which the typology of psychoanalytic analysis, inaugurated by Freud and Jung himself, is based; the latter was also deeply interested in understanding the cultural and spiritual relationship between East and West, from ancient times to today. Although the individual forms of experience are manifold, they move, as the alchemical symbolism demonstrates, around certain central archetypical characters which are universals and presents in every historical epoch. The interpretation of alchemical texts still remains a subject of debate, and perhaps this is why Jung and his collaborators (such as Von Franz and Hillman), when they approached it, felt that it was a road which would have a significant sequel for the understanding of human interiority and in particular for the function of the relationship between the masculine and the feminine.
