- Resum
- No written record has been preserved for most of the big banquets that have been organized within the princely courts in the Late Middle Ages. I consider here the hypothesis that the size and the distinctiveness of the political banquets – organized for instance when ambassadors or rulers were entertained – led to a special written production. Its goal was to announce the festivities, to organize them practically and to make their magnificence known. Thanks to a particular banquet – the “dinner” that has been hosted on
6th of January 1378 by king of France Charles V in honor of the emperor Charles IV – we can highlight the different types of docu-ments, as narrative and household accounts, and lists (of dishes, guestsor gifts). On this occasion, some rolls, booklets and pictures were pro-duced by people who were involved in the implementation of the event(heralds, butlers, cooks and chamberlains) or who were interested torelay it (allied princes or historians). This occurred in the context of apolitical competition, particularly between France and England, inwhich the banquet played a key role.
