- Resum
- This chapter focuses on the environment and the reasons that motivated the appearance of the In Leonardum Fuchsium apologia of Michael Villanovanus or Servetus, especially with a philological perspective. This work, written in Latin and dated in 1536, belongs to a set of apologetic and invective writings of some humanist physicians. In fact, some works by Sébastien Champier and Sébastien Monteux, and the Paradoxorum... libri by Leonhart Fuchs are directly involved in that of Miguel de Villanueva. But the Apologia has connection also with other writings. One important reason of the invective offered by all these works was the more or less correct interpretation of the ancient medical texts and, concerning this, the adherence of the authors to a renewed Galenism not deformed by the medieval Latin expression of the Medicine. Thus, the principles of a philological Medicine are the basis of the attacks spilled in these works and are the proof of the importance that the medical Humanism devoted to Greek and Latin medical texts for the development and dissemination of the Medicine.
