- This study aims to highlight the deixis in medieval Catalan texts on agriculture, interpreting this element as evidence that in the Catalan-speaking region a native agronomic science was beginning to take shape. Although just like in other Mediterranean zones, the Catalan-speaking region also sought to adapt classical and Arab models to local exigencies, the deixis (i.e., direct references to the immediate surroundings) found in eight separate Catalan texts of this period indicate that throughout this area a tendency toward erudite reflexion on the theory and practice of agriculture was growing. These texts, and the direct references made by their authors, translators, scribes, compilers and comentators to the local reality that surrounded them ―often in digressions or departures from the texts that served as their models― reveal that among the 14th and 15th century Catalan and Valencian learned elite there was a growing consciousness that a native agronomic science was being born.
