Bos, Gerrit - McVaugh, Michael R. - Shatzmiller, Joseph, Transmitting a Text Through Three Languages: The Future History of Galen's Peri Anomalou Dyskrasias, Filadèlfia, American Philosophical Society (Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, 104.5), 2014, 176 pp.
- Resum
- This study examines the translation of Galen's original Greek text into Arabic by Hunayn ibn Ishaq in the ninth century (Fi su' al-mizag al-muhtalif); the translation of Hunayn's text into Latin by Gerard of Cremona in the later twelfth century (as De malicia complexionis diverse); and the translation of Gerard's version into Hebrew (Sefer ro‘a mezeg mithallef) by David Caslari of Besalú (d. c. 1315) at the beginning of the fourteenth century. The translation techniques of each individual translator are explored, and the changes in the text as it passed from one language to the next are discussed. The text of each translation is provided, edited from the surviving manuscripts, an English translation of the Arabic is supplied, and the translators' vocabularies are laid out in the glossaries that conclude the volume.
