Rosen, Ralph M., "Ethical Works", dins: Singer, P. N. - Rosen, Ralph M. (eds.), The Oxford Handbook of Galen, Oxford, Oxford Academic, 2024, pp. 436-474.
ResumThis chapter examines Galen's works on ethical and psychological topics, including The Diagnosis and Treatment of the Affections and Errors Peculiar to Each Person's Soul, Character Traits, and Avoiding Distress. It discusses the various philosophical influences on Galen's ethical thinking—in particular Platonism and Stoicism—as well as Galen's psychotherapeutic recommendations. Galen took seriously the various behavioral elements of a person's life—such as emotions, impulses, temperament, and personality—as factors relevant to assessing someone's overall health and happiness. This chapter explores Galen's interests in behavioral psychology, personality, and virtue, as well as the philosophical background that informs these works.
