Resum: The paper provides a thorough description of the medieval Italian manuscripts of medicine from the former Preussische Staatsbibliothek kept in the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow. Codicological and philological details determinetheir origin and dating. Most of the texts in the manuscripts have been identified for the first time. The question of vernacularization is examined through ananalysis of the authors', copyists,' and compilers' stated intentions. The theory of vertical stratification of languages for special purposes is introduced as a valid theoretical framework for explaining the coexistence of medical texts in Latin andin vernacular languages in the Middle Ages.
