Hunt, Tony (ed.), Old French Medical Texts, París, Classiques Garnier (Textes littéraires du Moyen Âge, 18), 2011, 290 pp.
ResumAn edition of four previously unpublished medical texts from north-eastern France c. 1300, which cover therapeutic receipts, gynaecology, urology, surgery and hippiatry and mark a prominent moment in the vernacularisation of medical knowledge in France and a fascinating addition to the medical lexis of medieval France (each edited text is furnished with a detailed glossary). The volume contains editions of (1) a medical compendium (including, most notably, the Lettre d'Hippocrate as well as excerpts on women's diseases translated from the Trotulan De sinthomatibus mulierum); (2) a French version of Gilles de Corbeil's De urinis (actually found in the medical compendium edited in the first section, but presented separately); (3) the only known Old French translation of the Four Masters' Gloss of Roger Frugard's Chirugia; and (4) an abridged Old French version of Jordanus Rufus' De medicina equorum. All editions are provided from a single manuscript volume (London, Wellcome Library, MS 546).
