- Resum
- "The Medieval Boethius is an anthology of eight new essays dealing with translations of the De Consolatione Philosophiae into English, French, and Spanish, addressed to «those with interests in the transmission of Boethian philosophy and poetry, the emergence of European literature in the Latin Middle Ages, the medieval theory and practice of translation, and, more generally, in the "reception history" of the classics of western literature». An interest in manuscript studies is also rewarded: several of the essays approach the subject through detailed discussion of particular manuscripts, and three of them are handsomely illustrated with plates from French, Latin, and English manuscripts of Boethius. These three essays concentrate on the accretions acquired by the text at the hands of medieval glossators [...] The collection is perhaps more specialized and technical than the prefatory announcement suggests, but the essays are written in an accessible style, the bibliographical, textual, linguistic, and statistical details are lucidly presented, and knowledge of the understanding of Boethius in the Middle Ages is considerably enhanced." -- Ph.
