Hübner, Gaby, "Die mathematischen Reden von Joachim Jungius (1587-1657)", Sudhoffs Archiv, 80/2 (1996), 184-197.
- Resum
- While the natural scientist, scholar and teacher Joachim Jungius of Lübeck (1587-1657) is mostly known for his Logica Hamburgensis and Praelectiones Physicae, this article focuses on his speeches, especially the inaugural speeches held in Gießen (1609) and Rostock (1624 and 1626) that define his position in the history of mathematics. Jungius' concept of the preparatory value of mathematics has been pointed out by earlier scholars who, however, mostly took into consideration his up to that point only published speech (Hamburg 1629). This article looks closely at the text of his recently published speeches, rectifying the traditional interpretation of Jungius' idea of preparatory mathematics. A short description of the speeches in general shows Jungius' commitment to the humanistic tradition of classical literature and rhetoric.
