- The experiential knowledge of a dietary Arabic treatise in tabular form, Ibn Buṭlān's Taqwīm al-ṣiḥḥa (Reestablishment of Health), was transformed around 1390 into a new type of book, the illustrated Tacuinum sanitatis, that used pictures instead of tables, illustrating each remedy and incorporating observational experience. The four earliest surviving copies of this type of book partially exchanged the original remedies and adapted them to Italian needs. The accompanying texts to the added remedies suggest a high level of medical expertise in their composition, which appears to have been influenced by the treatise Liber aggregatus by the Arab Serapion the Younger and to physicians of the Visconti court and the University of Pavia in Italy. The botanical images also document a newly accurate morphology, probably resulting from collaboration between artists and plant specialists. With their focus on recording empirical experience, the images expand the content of the original treatise, the text of which merely described healing effects, to include early visual means of communicating plant knowledge. The production context of this type of book suggests that the Visconti court used it to communicate an ideology that emphasized the health of the ruler and his state.
