- Resum
- Plateari, Practica brevis (s. XII).
The aim of this paper is to analyze the most significant lexical problems which occur in the work Practica, a Latin medical text written by the physician Platearius in the XIIth century at the School of Salerno, one of the best known medical schools in the Middle Ages. After explaining how Platearius uses some of the Greek vocabulary inherited from his sources, we focus on some of its lexical distortions, discussing their origin and causes. Since etymology is a very remarkable part of this text, we put forward the etymological meanings – either right or wrong - that Platearius gives for several illnesses and the great impact they had on later medical authors, especially writers of encyclopedic works. Finally we list the new Arabic vocabulary that appears in our text, a vocabulary which mainly comes from the Arabic-Latin translations by the monk Constantinus Africanus in Montecassino.
