Vesalius, Andreas, The Fabric of the Human Body: an annotated translation of the 1543 and 1555 editions of De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem, by Daniel H. Garrison and Malcolm H. Hast, Basilea, S. Karger AG, 2014, 2 vols.
- Resum
- The Fabric of the Human Body is an annotated English translation of the 1543 and 1555 editions of Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica libri septem including the most important of Vesalius' newly discovered personal notes for a never published third edition. This translation and its fresh reconstructions of Vesalius' sublime illustrations (all 273 of the woodcuts are scanned and restored to a level of clarity neither achieved) make Vesalius' school of thinking truly accessible in English for the first time. It is framed in an innovative, easy-to-use design. Introductions by Vivian Nutton and Nancy Siraisi, and an eminent advisory board including medical historians Vivian Nutton and Hubert Steinke, palaeographer-codicologist Ueli Dill, and art historian Sachiko Kusikawa. This title recreates the masterpiece of science and art for the first time in a way that is understandable to 21st century readers who do not have any knowledge of Latin. The texts of both the 1543 and the 1555 editions have been translated with the utmost care by Northwestern University Professors Emeritus Daniel H. Garrison and Malcolm H. Hast, a task they completed in over 20 years of painstaking and dedicated work. Annotations give the reader keen insight into just how innovative 'De humani corporis fabrica' was, and high-resolution digital scans of the almost 300 woodcuts provide the images with a sharpness they never had before.
