- Several typologies have been made concerning the pre-Islamic censers or altars, but this type of study has never been done for the Islamic incense-burners. We define as an 'incense-burner' any container used for burning with aromatic resins in a secular context. These objects are not only evidence of the use of incense, but also of its trade. In this paper the author presents a typology of pottery incense burners together with those made of soft-stone. The former are mostly made locally, and their shapes are generally linked to a limited area, whereas the latter are linked to trade networks because the soapstone mines are much localized. The typology is based on the features of material, shape and design. Catalogues and maps have been made in order to propose a chronological and geographical typology. Hopefully this typology will be useful to help publishing these neglected Islamic period objects.
