Constantine the African, Theorica Pantegni: Facsimile and Transcription of the Helsinki manuscript (Codex EÖ.II.14), edited by Outi Kaltio, in collaboration with Heikki Solin and Matti Haltia, Helsinki, National Library of Finland, 2011 (ed. electrònica).
- Resum
- Constantine's (d. ante 1098/99) Pantegni is a Latin rendering of Haly ibn al-'Abbas al-Majusi's Kitab kamil as-sina'a at-tibbiyah. There are three different versions available: the facsimile, the transcription, and the combination of the facsimile and the transcription page by page. Each version is accompanied by (the same) brief introduction. In transcribing the text, Kaltio relied on two other 12th-century manuscript witnesses (The Hague, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Ms 73 J6; and London, the British Library, Ms Add. 22719) as well as the Basel Edition from 1539. (A study of the Hague MS, which is the earliest extant copy of the text, is coming out under the direction of F. Erik Kwakkel and Francis Newton.) The Helsinki MS lacks Book I and the end of Book X, so this will not be the definitive text for scholarly reference to the Pantegni, Theorica. But it is an important step forward in our knowledge of one of the most important texts to bring Arabic medicine into western Europe. The presence of the facsimile and complete transcript also makes this a great aid for teaching medical paleography. [M. Green]
