- The XVI century is critical for the healthcare in the city of Bologna. Ulisse Aldrovandi is named Protomedico with the task of controlling the correct composition of the medicaments in the apothecaries. In 1574 the first Antidotario Bolognese was introduced by Ulisse Aldrovandi and commissioned by the Government of the city to be used by the apothecaries. During the years several disputes took place between Aldrovandi and the apothecaries evolving in a real war with these and the Medical College against Aldrovandi. The main matter of the dispute pertains to one of the most famous medicaments used in the ancient times: Theriac. Vipers contested by Aldrovandi to the apothecaries
and new ingredients introduced by the scientist are occasions of bitter divergence. A viperine quarrel that brings Aldrovandi to be expelled for five years from the Medical College and solved only with the intervention of Pope Gregory XIII.
