"Book of Secrets is an informal miscellany of practical texts, apparently assembled for the use of the household at Helmingham Hall" (p. xiii). "May be dated ... to late fifteenth or early sixteenth century ... ownership inscription of Catherine Tollemache inside front wrapper indicates that the manuscript came into her possession some time after 1581" (p. 2). Tollemache, Catherine (fl. 1581-1620).
