vol. 1. Ancient and patristic.
This book examines the development of psychological theory during ancient and patristic times. The following idea was the criterion in selecting the data and the principle in grouping the data: The nature of man is regarded as forming the center of three great lines of interest, namely, the study of human activities as the psychologist sees them, the study of human life as the doctor looks at it, and the growth of systematic beliefs as reflected in philosophy and religion. The union of these in their historical development seemed likely to yield what might be called an autobiography of the human mind. The author asserts that a history of psychology must not anticipate; it must be a record of beliefs about the soul and of the growth of the human mind in and through the development of those beliefs.
vol. 2. Mediaeval & early modern period.
As part of a larger set of works designed to record--in their chronological order--the steps by which psychology has reached its present stage of development, this volume examines the development of psychology during the mediaeval and early modern period. Part I focuses on the background of mediaeval thought, including the influence of theology, scholarship and tradition, progress of doctrines in the fifth and sixth centuries, and the Arabian teachers. Part II examines the groundwork and beginnings of mediaeval psychology, from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. Part III covers the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, discussing the scientific basis, systematic thought and Descartes, and the expansion of psychology in the seventeenth century. Part IV focuses on the eighteenth century, and includes chapters on the British psychologists, continental empiricism, the beginning of German psychology, and the influence and applications of psychology from 1700-1800.
vol. 3. Modern psychology.
This volume describes the history of psychology from roughly the 17th century until the modern period. The development of thought in Britain, France, and Germany is discussed in detail, with other sections devoted to Italian writers and psychology in America. In addition to specific theorists and researchers within the history of psychology, this book discusses the scope of modern psychology, including developments in method, social psychology, child psychology, animal psychology, psychoanalysis, and criminal psychology.
