- This book offers a comprehensive overview of the work, intellectual contribution, medical activity, and historical legacy of Galen (Galēnos, 129–c. 210 CE), arguably the most significant medical figure of the Greco-Roman world, as well as an important contributor to the philosophical discourse, especially in the areas of logic, epistemology, causation, scientific method, and ethics. Its twenty-nine chapters, written by prominent scholars in their fields, present accessible, but at the same time thorough and detailed, analyses of all major areas of Galen's thought, clinical practice, and literary output, considered in their original historical context, as well as of the most important pathways and phases of the transmission of his texts and his intellectual legacy, from late antiquity to early modern times and from Western Europe to Tibet and China.
