- Resum
- T he essay aims to shed light on a previously unknown episode of witch-hunt that occurred in central Italy, specifically in Amelia, between September and November 1446. This case enriches the historical understanding of a complex and multifaceted phenomenon such as fifteenth-century witchcraft and is in continuity with what has already emerged from previous research conducted in neighbouring areas. The legal proceedings in Amelia were not undertaken by the ecclesiastical judge, but rather by the secular one and were characterized – at least initially – by a certain rigidity. Investigations likely took place after the convocation in the town of observant Franciscan friars such as Giacomo della Marca and Giovanni da Capestrano. The trials point out the establishment of a climate of denunciation which, after a death sentence, led the city authorities themselves to intervene to curb the proliferation of accusations.
