- When the Speyer printer and bookseller Peter Drach commissioned a translation of the ‚Ruralia commoda‘ of Petrus de Crescentiis in the early 1490s and had woodcuts made to accompany both the German translation and an edition of the Latin text, he was undoubtedly influenced by the success Peter Schöffer and other printers had with illustrated herbals in the previous decade. The woodcuts, many of which were copied from a ‚Gart der Gesundheit‘ edition, were not quite finished when the German translation appeared on October 1, 1493 and extend only into the ninth of twelve books. The Latin edition appeared slightly later with the full complement of woodcuts. The German translator who identifies himself in two places as „Brother Franciscus“ was probably a monk from Speyer or vicinity. Since he does not identify himself at the beginning or end of the text, previous scholars have thought the translation to be anonymous. His comments make it clear that he tried to translate as accurately as possible, and he was largely successful in this endeavor.
