- Resum
- In early modern societies, astrology provided a general world view which explained both human and natural phenomena. The explanations it offered of political and social events, as well as of human nature and health, derived from a coherent system of knowledge based on the correspondences between the heavens and the earth. An acquaintance with this system was acquired by university training and constituted a scholar discipline; however, a general understanding of astrology was widely shared by all groups of society and also related to non-scholar ideas and practices. The aim of this paper is to identify some of the ideas that were most popular and the way they are presented in sources produced in different intellectual environments, focusing on the case of Valencia. One of the keys to understanding the presence of astrology in various social and intellectual contexts is to consider what aspects of the discipline were being taught at the university, along with the presence of astrological ideas practices in everyday life, and this is done through sources of a varied nature, such as dietaris, printed and manuscript works by scholars and popular astrologers, and inquisitorial sources. Key words: Astrology, comets, University of Valencia, chair of mathematics, dietaris.
