The Calabrian nobleman Giordano Ruffo is the author of the foundational work on veterinary science in the medieval Western world, most commonly known as De medicina equorum. There is a Galician version of this text transmitted through the ms. 23076 in the National Library in Madrid, which contains a copy of that translation. As codex unicus, the Madrid text shows editorial problems which other known versions of this work can contribute to solve, since Ruffo's treaty was spread in Latin and Romance languages among others. The present essay illustrates this situation through the analysis of a set of terms used to refer to some medicinal simplices (savina, escabiosa, citrangulo, atramente) which scholars have sometimes interpreted in a wrong way and which would have in the Galician text its first, and sometimes even its only, source of documentation.
