- Known since Antiquity as much for its scent as for its medicinal properties and applications in dyeing, saffron remained until today, as the spice with the largest commercial value in the world. Even with the competition of "drugs of the East", it kept being used in Medicine and Food, especially in recipes for the sick and the convalescents. We intent to explore the place of this spice in the Pharmacy and Kitchen of Portugal in the modern age, noting which medicinal properties were attributed to him and which culinary uses were reserved to it, confronting this information with what is currently known about their chemical composition and therapeutic applications
