- Resum
- This doctoral thesis offers a quantitative analysis of Middle English weaponry terms and a lexical analysis of their original sources based on previous research, such as Knowles (2005), Durkin (2014), Baugh & Cable (2009), et al. For this purpose, the Middle English Weaponry Corpus (MEWC) was specifically created, it is made up of 184 entries referring to both offensive and defensive weapons found in Middle English texts from 1100 up to 1500. The two main resources are the Oxford English Dictionary and the Middle English Dictionaryfrom the University of Michigan, but other databases in several languages were also used. This work is aimed at determining the lexical origins for the MEWC terms and analysing the presence of borrowings from other languages and their influence. The different sources and amount of lexical borrowings in Middle English were statistically analysed and the results are provided. The MEWCentries are classified into different categories depending on whether the MEWCterms refer to either a new or an already existing object in Middle English, as well as the type of weapon to which the terms refer and how borrowings entered into English. According to our results, at least 19% of these entries correspond with native English terms, 79% are borrowings and 2% have an unclear origin. Thus, we find that approximately 65% of terms come from French, around 6% of the terms are from Old Norse, between 3% and 6% can be traced back to Latin, between 1.5% and 3% come from Dutch or Low German and, finally, between 0.5% and 2% originated from the different Celtic languages. After analysing the results, we finally comment on the relationship between the origins of the MEWCterms and the criteria aforementioned regarding the incorporation of borrowings in the Middle English period.
