- Resum
- This contribution is framed in a series of new reflections about subjects already treated by historiography, because they admit new approaches. In this case, I have analysed the theory and the practice of medicine in the Middle Ages, from the perspective of the historical anthropology. The methodology followed has been the bibliographical screening of scientific literature both Spanish and foreing, as well as the utilisation of existing published sources and archive materials, incremented with the writing and treaties of period thinkers – medical, moral, normative, notarial, in addition to contemporary literature. The primary sources are Catalan, French and Italian, given that it is in those geographical areas where I carry out my research. From those approaches I have been able to get closer to the medical culture, from its beginnings in the Early Middle Ages monasteries; I have witnessed the divorce between medicine and surgery, as well as the influence of religion on disease and the way to accept it. In the paragraph dedicated to therapeutics, I have studied the influence of bio-pharmaceutical medicine, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. In the pharmacy section, I have considered the types of remedies, the treatises, the apothecary and a brief note on popular medicine. The last part of my exhibition has considered the professionalism, the medical behaviour and its rules, as well as the relationships between doctors and cities and the diseased.
