- Resum
- The so-called ‘disputa delle arti', which ignited the best intellectuals from the late fourteenth century onward and is considered to be a typical expression of Italian humanism, was originated by a previous debate born within the scolastic milieu. The humanists inserted themselves in this debate, albeit with different outcomes. Examples of this typically medieval debate are rare; some echoes can be found in the commendationes of disciplines, in the categorizations of knowledge, and indirectly also in the disputes for intellectual and social prominence among the various scolastic components. The sermon ‘de comparacione scientie medicine ad scientiam legalem' by Giuliano Preonti, professor of medicine at the University of Bologna in the first half of the fourteenth century, pronounced in 1342 for the opening of the academic year, is one such example. Although it repeats -sometimes not clearly- themes and rhetorical devices that later would become typical of the humanist debate, this official sermon, whose edition is here offered, well exemplifies the precocity, and also the stickiness, of a dispute later brought to the forefront by Coluccio Salutati and his successors.
