- Resum
- Despite the importance of uroscopic diagnosis and prognosis in medieval medicine, the wide array of Middle English treatises on the subject remains an exceptionally challenging genre to navigate. The information presented in this article is intended to facilitate future studies and editions of Middle English uroscopic writings. Based on a survey of Middle English uroscopy texts identified with the aid of the Voigts-Kurtz database of Scientific and Medical Writings in Old and Middle English and others located by the author, this article organizes those texts into an analytical taxonomy of approximately 130 distinct works. It describes these works and their principal variant forms, lists their witnesses, and comments briefly on selected individual witnesses. Texts are divided first into anonymous and attributed works; these two main sections are further organized by roughly decreasing numbers of witnesses per text within each section. Five appendices complement the taxonomy: 1. a list and brief descriptions of selected non-uroscopic texts frequently associated with specific uroscopies, along with their manuscript witnesses; 2. an index of manuscripts containing Middle English uroscopy texts; 3. a list of uroscopies with more than five witnesses; 4. defining uroscopic signs in major uroscopic token lists; 5. a lightly annotated list of the Latin texts cited in the taxonomy.
Guide to over 200 manuscripts containing Middle English uroscopic texts -- manuscripts listed together in Appendix B at the end of the article. Many of the manuscripts also contain other English and Latin medical texts, especially of the more practical variety (phlebotomy, herbals, receptaria, astromedicine, etc.).
