- The text analyzes an interesting and little known coastal circumnavigation of Sardinia included in the text of the oldest portolano so far found, the Liber de existencia riveriarum et forma maris nostri Mediterranei. This manuscript of the Liber in turn is part of the composite code Cotton Domitianus A XIII of the British Library of London, entirely transcribed and published in 1995 by Patrick Gautier Dalché. According to the French philologist, the anonymous Liber de existencia riveriarum inserted in the Cottonian codex is a copy of a Pisan text compiled in the second half or at the end of the 12th century (c. 1160-1200), perhaps made in one of the monasteries of Winchester. The Liber, or perhaps a copy of it, was probably acquired by the British royal administration to prepare the routes of the ships that were to participate in the Third Crusade (1189-1192).
