- Resum
- This thesis aims to highlight the mathematical vocabulary of the trattati or libri d'abaco, which are manuals of commercial arithmetic written in vernacular Italian by the masters of the abacus schools and based on Leonardo Fibonacci's Liber abaci. The first chapter deals with the study of mathematics and the transmission of mathematical texts in the Middle Ages, focusing on the main characteristics of the Italian manuals. Finally, the reflection on abacus treatises extends to the Iberian Peninsula, particularly the Catalan area, where some documents are preserved on the activities of masters of practical arithmetic. Among the approximately 300 abacus books identified by Warren Van Egmond in his catalogue, the Libro de raxoni merchatantesche transmitted by the codex Palermo, Biblioteca Comunale, 2 Qq Ee 13 (14th cent., 1398) was considered one of the most representative examples of this genre, as it deals with all its characteristic subjects. Moreover, the text is also transmitted by the codex Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. Lat. 4825 (15th century, 1430) and that allows us to reflect on the copying mechanisms of abacus treatises, which are subjected to contamination and reworking. Therefore, in the second chapter we propose the critical edition of Libro de raxoni merchatantesche. The production of practical arithmetic texts is not limited to the Italian area but is also found in other European regions. Among the manuals produced outside the Italian peninsula, the Catalan Llibre de l'art de l'abba, one of the sections of the Llibre que explica lo que ha de ser un bon mercader preserved in the codex Palma, Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca, Diversos 37B/2 (15th cent.), seemed to us the only text comparable in chronology, form, and content to the Italian abacus books. The third chapter of the thesis is therefore dedicated to the edition of the Llibre de l'art de l'abba. Both the Libro di raxoni merchantesche and the Llibre de l'art de l'abba have a section of tables consisting of images of calculation tables and geometric diagrams. The fourth chapter presents an annotated glossary of the mathematical vocabulary of the Libro di raxoni merchantesche. The glossary aims to enhance the lexical heritage of the abacus treatises through the addition of new data to the existing lexicographic repertory and the identification of entries not otherwise attested. The appendix presents two abacus books not included in Van Egmond's catalogue. These codices are preserved in the Biblioteca Palatina in Parma under the shelfmark Pal. 295 and Pal. 312.
