- Resum
- Estudi i traducció a l'alemany del tractat de menescalia armeni més antic que es coneix, elaborat al regne de Cilícia vers 1295-1298, obra d'un monjo armeni i d'un menescal sirià.
At about the end of the 13th century, a Syrian horse doctor and an Armenian monk with a way with words wrote down the entire hippological wisdom of the time in the Armenian kingdom of Kilikia. Up to the present day, this unique manuscript in considered as the only extant testimony to Armenian hippological knowledge and medicine and as the most comprehensive of all. It is impressive to see how the wisdom of the Arabs and Persians was combined with that coming from India as well as with the ancient hippological literature and enriched with invaluable Armenian knowledge, especially an extremely advanced plant medicine for horses. An extensive commentary on the manuscript and on the history of horses in Armenia, but also expert commentaries on mediaeval anatomy, plant medicine and the training of the horses for combat make a good introduction to the translation. A multilingual glossary rounds off the translation for those interested in language, and an explanatory appendix helps readers with no hippological experience. All in all a comprehensive work, remarkably versatile and informative, which not only enriches the history of hippological medicine and Armenian philology and has the power to reformulate it; it also whisks the reader off to the as yet unknown world of horses between Europe and Asia in the Middle Ages, even giving him a look at the present-day situation of horses in Armenia.
