- Resum
- The site of “Casa das Bicas” is located in the historic center of the town of Loulé and is thought to be a dumpster from islamic times (Almohad; 13th century). The faunal analyses shows a small collection of vertebrates and invertebrates. The vertebrate species are, by order of abundance, sheep and goat, rabbit, ox, horse, swi- ne (status, domesticated or wild, unknown), dog and/or wolf, cat, red deer and hare. Some remains of shes and birds, chickens and unclassi ed species, were also found. The rarity of swine remains its not unusual in contexts from this birds, since its meat was considered impure by islamic laws. Also to be noticed the clear dominance of domesticated animals, a usual trend in islamic urban contexts in Algarve (other sites, that had a higher military presence, such as the Castles of Paderne or Salir, show a higher number of wild animals' remains). As for the invertebrates, we have indenti ed, also by order of abundance, clams, cockles, scallops, oyster and snails, both marine and terrestrial. Together with shes remains, these evidences show that there was an established trade for marine food between the coast and inland (Loulé is located ca. 9km from the coast). The collection also displays some obvious human modi cations, such as cutmarks and burned bones. Unfortunately, our conclusions are limited by the absence of other studies, from different archaeological materials, in Casa das Bicas. Therefore, they should be considered preliminary.
